Campanologist returned to his best on his first start of 2010 by capturing the Group Two Dubai City Of Gold Sponsored by Derrinstown Stud, Marju at Meydan on Thursday, March 4.
The five-year-old Kingmambo horse finished with a flourish to beat Pan River by a neck in 2m 37.36s for the 12 furlongs on turf.
It was Campanologist’s first start for well over four months. He broke smartly under Frankie Dettori before being held up in fifth.
Going well entering the straight, the Godolphin horse was switched out and came with a good run to gain ascendency in the closing stages and then hold off the runner-up.
Anmar, who won his previous two starts on artificial surfaces, did not produce the same level of form on turf, finishing fifth for Ahmed Ajtebi after coming from second last with two and a half furlongs to go.
The third Godolphin hope - Claremont with Ted Durcan up - kept on in the straight without ever troubling the leaders to be sixth.
The Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor, commented: "Campanologist ran a huge race first time out. He will maybe run next in the Dubai Sheema Classic.
"Mentally and physically, he has improved a lot since last year. This year we have been lucky with him, he's happy, sound and healthy.
"He was carrying a little condition and will improve a lot from this race.
"I think he will be a Group One horse in Europe this year. He has improved and is more focused."
Campanologist boosted Godolphin’s already excellent record in the race. Following on from Highest (2003), Narrative (2002), Give The Slip (2001), High-Rise (2000) Sibling Rival (1999) and Happy Valentine (1998).
